Telmisartan is prescribed as a single salt or in combination with other drugs in the management of high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a condition that can damage the brain, kidneys, heart, and many organs. The damage to any organ can lead to heart attack, kidney failure, loss of eyesight, and many more.It is also administered to patients, especially in older age suffering from cardiovascular disease to lessen the chances of heart attack, stroke, or death. This drug comes in the category of angiotensin blocker. Angiotensin consists of a protein hormone that results in stenosis in the blood vessels, therefore, Telmisartan blocks angiotensin and helps smooth the flow of blood thereby increasing the efficiency of the heart.Hydrochlorothiazide works as a thiazide diuretic. It helps in enhancing the urine flow, thereby, helping to reduce the water content in the body of the patient. Hydrochlorothiazide also helps to treat hypertension.Telmisartan 40mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg is available in tablet form with a combination of two salts. One is Telmisartan and the other is hydrochlorothiazide. This combination of drugs is prescribed for patients having high blood pressure whereas Telmisartan alone is not adequate to control high blood pressure. It is essentially required to control high blood pressure as hypertension creates more workload on the heart as well as on arteries. This overload, if continued for a longer period, affects the functioning of the heart and arteries, thus, may result in damage to kidneys and brain blood vessels.
How Does It Work?
A combination of the effective blood pressure-lowering drugs telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide is known as telmisartan + hydrochlorothiazide. Angiotensin receptor blocker telmisartan (ARB). It relaxes the blood arteries by inhibiting the hormone angiotensin. This makes the heart's pumping action more effective and the blood flows more smoothly. A diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide flushes out surplus water and some electrolytes from the body.

Indication
Telmisartan and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are prescribed for hypertension. This combination of medicine helps in the management of high blood pressure, thus, reducing the chances of heart attack and problems related to the kidneys. Telmisartan relaxes blood vessels as it belongs to angiotensin receptor blockers. When the blood vessels are relaxed, blood starts flowing smoothly. Hydrochlorothiazide helps to increase the flow of urine. When either of these two drugs is not working for hypertension effectively, then Telmisartan in combination with Hydrochlorothiazide is a preferred prescription for the management of high blood pressure which becomes the major cause of heart attack, brain stroke, and kidney failure.
Administration Of Dosage
For adults, Telmisartan in 40 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide in 12.5 mg are prescribed in combination with a fixed dosage to manage hypertension when the single drug is not effective. The medicine is given once daily. Since one of the salts of the medicine Hydrochlorothiazide increases the urine flow, it is medically advisable to schedule your dose in such a way that the same is taken much before your time of sleep to avoid urinating, thus, helping you to have uninterrupted sleep. If the patient is taking medicine for cholesterol like cholestyramine or colestipol, the dose of Telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide may be taken keeping a gap of at least 4 to 6 hours before or after these medicines are taken for lowering cholesterol.
