PREBIOTICS
A pre-biotic is a selectively fermented ingredient that allows specific changes, both in the composition and/or
activity in the gastrointestinal micro-flora that confers benefits upon host well-being and health. Today, only 2
dietary non-digestible oligosaccharides fulfill all the criteria for pre-biotic classification. Those 2 being
fructooligosaccharides and galactooligosaccharides.
PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are dietary supplements of live bacteria or yeasts thought to be healthy for the host organism.
According to the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: ‘Live microorganisms which when
administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the most
common type of microbes used. LAB have been used in the food industry for many years, because they are
able to convert sugars (including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This not only provides the
characteristic sour taste of fermented dairy foods such as yogurt, but also, by lowering the pH, may create
fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow, hence creating possible health benefits by preventing
gastrointestinal infections. Strains of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are the most widely used
pro-biotic bacteria.
PREBIOTICS and PROBIOTICS:
Pre-biotics and pro-biotics can restore the balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics are beneficial
bacteria that can be found in various foods. When you eat probiotics, you will add these healthy bacteria to
your intestinal tract. Common strains include Lactobacillis and Bifidobacterium families of bacteria.
Prebiotics are non-digestible foods that make their way through our digestive system and help good bacteria
grow and flourish. Prebiotics keep beneficial bacteria healthy.
